Participating Artist:

North Devon Studio by Roy NorthRoy North - The theme that runs through Roy’s work is the effect of light and movement. His interiors show the light quite literally and his sense of humour comes through strongly by his depiction of moving figures. He is also not afraid to experiment with unorthodox shapes for his paintings, incorporating the development of his own interior format to define enclosed space with stunning trompe l’oeil results.

Roy was born in West Yorkshire in 1946. In 1961 he won a scholarship to the Barnsley School of Art before attending the Hammersmith/Chelsea College of Art in London attaining a London Certificate in Painting in 1967.

Roy has shown his work in many London exhibitions and received the Percy Brown Award at the West London Open in 1981 and was elected to the Selection Committee. He has also exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition as well as having annual Open Studio weeks at his studio in London as part of the ACAVA Group of artists. Many of his paintings are presently in permanent collections.

Roy moved from London to West Sussex, travelled the world, moved to the West Country and has lived and worked from his studio in Ashwater, North West Devon for the past decade, taking regular trips abroad to soak up culture and colour as inspiration for future works.

The Old Railway by Liane TancockLiane Tancock - My work draws upon the landscapes around my home in North Devon. My paintings focus on the landscapes I see everyday and act as portraits of places. I work from extensive sketches and photographs to capture the personalities and quirks of the landscapes. I want to draw the viewer into the landscape, my reactions to its forms, colours and moods. The paintings are a diary of my connection to the environment in which I live.

New Artists for Spring 2010.

Last Light by Linda ChiltonLinda Chilton - I trained as an embroiderer with Jan Beaney and Jean Littlejohn at Windsor and Maidenhead College, winning the City and Guilds Silver Medal. I went on to exhibit all over southern England, with shows at The Museum of Garden History, and Salisbury Museum. I have travelled to Japan to exhibit and demonstrate my work. I now live and work in North Devon, where I have exhibited at RHS Rosemoor, and currently have work at The Little Gallery on the Farm.  My work is all on felt, which I colour with dilute acrylic paint, before covering the surface with machine stitching. I use a wide variety of threads and fabrics to create a satisfying surface.

Storm Approaching by Lester HalhedLester Halhed - After spending four years studying Graphic Design at the Glasgow School of Art, I moved to London and joined Thames Television where I worked for twenty five years as a Senior Graphic Designer. When Thames lost its franchise in 1992, I decided to move to Devon where I now live with my wife Jane and paint full time.

Inspiration for my paintings is all around me. Exmoor, being right on my doorstep, is a constant influence with its everchanging moods, colour, light and cloud patterns. Atmosphere excites me more than detail. A picture, I feel, must push boundaries and go beyond what inspired the artist. When this is achieved, a painting is created and not just painted.

I wish to thank all the artists who have inspired me, consciously and unconsciously on my creative, endless journey.

Puffin by Allie GilesAllie Giles - Allie Giles’ latest collection of artwork draws on inspiration from her love of animals, nature and imagination. Her technique of building layers of ink with minute mark-making expresses an empathy for the subject — allowing all the emotion, magic and humour of the subject to translate into form through tone and shade.

For Allie, recreating the innocence, beauty and intricacy of nature through drawing is a restful release. She is based in Devon and has an educational background in Fine Art, Mixed Media and Art Therapy.
